The Añashuayco Quarries are a natural tourist attraction. They are located northwest of the city of Arequipa. They are also known as the “Quarry of Sillar”. They are located in a ravine that extends for more than 18 kilometers. They rise at the foot of Chachani, one of the most important volcanoes of the famous White City, next to the Chili River.

The Añashuayco ravine is located in the Uchumayo district. The name “Quarry of Sillar” was given precisely because this is the main construction material used for many years for the churches, mansions and convents of Arequipa.

The use of Sillar in the modern era

Quarrymen continue to extract ashlar for construction, and demand currently comes mainly from the new cities that are being developed in the Arequipa region.

Expanded Sillar Route

The Ruta del Sillar route also includes Quebrada de Culebrillas, an otherworldly path between curves of volcanic rock caused by eruptions, water and wind. No sillar has been extracted here. In fact, it is so pure that you can see petroglyphs believed to date back to the Wari period, carved into the walls of the sillar ravine.

• We continue to the Culebrillas Ravine
• 11:30am – we begin the return to Arequipa.

How to get to the Sillar Route?

Getting to the Ruta del Sillar quarry takes approximately 30-40 minutes one way from Arequipa. Upon arrival, you can see where the stonemasons have replicated the façade of the Church of the Society of Jesus, a landmark in the historic centre of Arequipa, by artistically carving it into the wall of the ravine.
