The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a famous trekking route in Peru that leads to the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. It’s renowned for its stunning scenery, including Andean mountains, cloud forests, and Incan archaeological sites. The trail typically takes about 4 days to complete, covering approximately 26 miles (43 kilometers) and reaching altitudes of over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) at its highest point, the Warmiwañusca pass (Dead Woman’s Pass).

The trail starts at Kilometer 82 along the railroad from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, where hikers begin their journey through diverse landscapes and historical sites, such as the Incan ruins of Llactapata and Wiñay Wayna. The climax of the trek is arriving at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the ancient citadel.

Due to its popularity and environmental sensitivity, the Inca Trail requires a permit, and access is limited to 500 people per day (including guides and porters). It’s recommended to book well in advance, especially during the peak season from May to September.
