Añashuayco and Culebrillas Quarries Tour
Sillar Route + Culebrillas Ravine.
We start our excursion according to the scheduled time.
First we will visit the Mirador de Zamacola, in the district of Cerro Colorado. From here we can also observe the majesty of the tutelary volcanoes of Arequipa, El Misti, El Chachani and Pichu Pichu. We will also be able to see beautiful sculptures based on ashlar that reflect the history of Arequipa.
Añashuayco Quarries.
Continuing on, we will head northwest of Arequipa to the district of Uchumayo. From the foot of the Nevado Chachani, the Añashuayco Quarries, also called “Quarry of Sillar”, extend for 18 km. This place was created in the Middle Pleistocene era, more than three million years ago.
Culebrillas Ravine.
Next we will go along a horseshoe path towards the Culebrillas ravine, formed by the erosion of the river. The name comes from the fact that it is a zigzag ravine, where we can also see cave paintings made thousands of years ago. This is a virgin quarry composed of ashlar and rocks.
Departure times: 7:40 am / 1:40 pm
Additional Information
The most outstanding
The Añashuayco Quarries are a natural tourist attraction. They are located northwest of the city of Arequipa. They are also known as the “Quarry of Sillar”. They are located in a ravine that extends for more than 18 kilometers. They rise at the foot of Chachani, one of the most important volcanoes of the famous White City, next to the Chili River.
The Añashuayco ravine is located in the Uchumayo district. The name “Quarry of Sillar” was given precisely because this is the main construction material used for many years for the churches, mansions and convents of Arequipa.
The use of Sillar in the modern era
Quarrymen continue to extract ashlar for construction, and demand currently comes mainly from the new cities that are being developed in the Arequipa region.
Expanded Sillar Route
The Ruta del Sillar route also includes Quebrada de Culebrillas, an otherworldly path between curves of volcanic rock caused by eruptions, water and wind. No sillar has been extracted here. In fact, it is so pure that you can see petroglyphs believed to date back to the Wari period, carved into the walls of the sillar ravine.
