What you have to take into account for the trip, remember that this trip is a mountaineering tour where we will be away from the city and most of the basic services:

• A light backpack with a change of clothes for the entire period of the hike – be prepared for a wide range of temperature changes.
• Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or rain poncho. Plastic ponchos can be purchased for about $1 in Cusco.
• Sturdy footwear, waterproof hiking boots are recommended. Extra socks are a must.
• Plastic sandals or flip-flops are also good to allow your feet to breathe at night, if you wish to wear them.
• Warm clothing, including jacket, fleece, gloves and scarf.
• Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping.
• It is hot in the Apurímac Canyon, so you should also be prepared for hot conditions on this hike.
• Sleeping bag (we can rent it).
• Flashlight and spare battery.
• Camera, film and batteries (batteries are consumed more quickly in cold conditions).
• Hat or cap to protect from the sun, rain and cold.
• Sunscreen.
• After-sun cream or moisturizer for face and body.
• Insect repellent – ​​a minimum of 20% DEET is recommended.
• Toilet paper.
• Bring snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, raw fruit, muesli, etc.
• Non-disposable canteen (Nalgene type) and water for the first morning.
• We advise you to bring water sterilization tablets in case you collect water from streams.
• Your own first aid kit with special medications you may need, paracetamol, second skin for blisters and more.
• Small towel or sarong.
• Cash: Enough for tips and souvenirs, or any drinks or snacks you might want to buy along the way.
• Walking sticks or poles (we can rent them).
• Binoculars (if you have them).

The Choquequirao trek is an excellent adventure package that will allow you to explore the impressive Apurimac Canyon and the Inca construction of Choquequirao, the most important Inca settlement from the 15th century in Cusco – Peru. The hike is challenging but one is rewarded by the splendid views of the Apurimac Canyon, the Vilcabamba mountain range and the iconic Choquequirao; the trail is open all year round but we recommend from April to November; during this time we are in the dry season; the rest of the year there are some landslides and the trail may be closed. It is important to be in good physical condition as this hike demands long distances each day.

This hike can also be done next to Machu Picchu, for this we will do the Choquequirao 7-day tour , where we will start in Choquequirao, until we reach Machu Picchu and return to Cusco.

The Choquequirao Trek 4 days

How to get to Choquequirao, to start the hike to Choquequirao, the last refuge of the Incas, we leave early in the morning in a private transport from Cusco, heading to the district of San Pedro de Cachora. We take the main road from Cusco to Abancay, with a detour at Ramal, where we take a dirt road for 16 km to the town of Cachora, while we are accompanied by a beautiful panorama of landscapes.

San Pedro de Cachora has a varied climate, characterized by a rainy season from November to March and a clear, dry season from April to October. Cachora is located at 2903m above sea level, with stunning views of the landscapes, highlighting the nearby snow-capped peak “Padreyoc”.

The views are very inspiring and awe-inspiring as we travel through an astonishing variety of ecological zones, from the cultivated valleys of the Andes, descending through an arid and hot canyon with Kapok, Cactus and Agave trees, and climbing through a region of lush, humid forests, beneath the imposing snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range.

From the village of Chiquisqa, the road to Choquequirao descends steeply towards the bottom of the Apurímac canyon to 1500m, where Playa Rosalina is located. From there we begin our ascent to the Inca city.

We arrive at Playa Rosalina at 1550m, 19km from Cachora with its banks bathed by the torrential Apurímac River. A suspension bridge crosses to the other side, where the trail continues its perpetual ascent.

The small towns we will pass through are Santa Rosa where we can enjoy “Cambray”, a delicious marinated drink made from sugar cane, and then to Marampata, near Choquequirao. From there we walk for about an hour and 30 minutes to our campsite in Choquequirao, where we will spend the night. This is a brief description of the Trekking to Choquequirao.
