Day 1: Arrival in Cusco – Cusco City Tour and Archaeological Sites

Our Cusco and Sacred Valley Tour begins with your arrival at Cusco Airport, followed by a transfer to your hotel where you can rest and acclimatize to the altitude to avoid altitude sickness. This first day is ideal for adapting to the city before starting the tours to the main tourist attractions in Cusco.

Cusco in City Tour

At 1:40 pm we will begin the Cusco City Tour, starting with a visit to the Main Square of Cusco (Huacaypata), the historic center of the imperial city. Then we will continue visiting the main Inca archaeological sites located around Cusco city.

  • Qoricancha Temple: Also known as the Temple of the Sun, it was one of the most important religious centers of the Inca Empire. It was built on Inca foundations where the Sun god was worshiped. The original Inca stone walls can still be seen here. This is also the place where the famous Inti Raymi festival begins every year.
  • Sacsayhuamán: An impressive archaeological complex known as a ceremonial place dedicated to the Sun god. Every June 21st, the Inti Raymi ceremony is celebrated here. It is famous for its enormous carved stones fitted together with incredible precision; some stones reach up to 9 meters (30 feet) in height and weigh more than 300 tons.
  • Qenqo: Considered a ceremonial temple where the Incas performed religious rituals and important ceremonies. The archaeological complex of Qenqo is still impressive today due to its underground galleries and carved rock formations.
  • Puca Pucara: An ancient military center and control point of the Inca Empire, composed of terraces, stairways, interior plazas, walls, and water channels. This site served as a control and resting place for travelers and soldiers.
  • Tambomachay: An archaeological site built with finely carved stone in polygonal style, also known as the “Inca Baths.” It is famous for its water channels and fountains that still carry crystal-clear water throughout the year.

At the end of the Cusco City Tour, we will return to the hotel. Free evening in Cusco.

Today, this picturesque town houses attractions from the pre-Hispanic, colonial and republican periods. We will then visit the Moray Archaeological Complex, located 7 km southwest of Maras. It is a set of enormous terraces that overlap concentrically in a gigantic hole. These beautiful terraces served in the Inca era as an agricultural laboratory, a “Greenhouse Prototype”.

Finally, we will visit the Salineras, located northwest of the town of Maras. They consist of about 2,000 small wells with an average area of about 5 m², exploited since the Inca era, the Colonial era and still being exploited by the locals. After our visit, we will return to the city of Cusco.
