Machu Picchu is on nearly everyone’s bucket list, with over two million visitors each year. But most travelers head straight to the citadel and miss out on some incredible experiences in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo), the gateway to the archaeological site. Take a few extra hours to explore these top 5 things to do in Machu Picchu beyond the ruins!
🏛️ 1. Be Amazed at the Manuel Chávez Ballón Museum
This hidden gem is a 30-minute walk from Aguas Calientes and one of the must-see attractions in Machu Picchu. Learn about the discovery and history of the site and view fascinating artifacts, including the original 1913 issue of National Geographic that introduced Machu Picchu to the world. There’s also a lovely botanical garden next to the museum showcasing local plants and trees.
Tip: Visit the museum before heading to the ruins, it will give you a deeper understanding of the citadel.
How to get there: Follow the same road as the buses heading to Machu Picchu. After crossing the bridge, the museum is on the right.
🦋 2. Take the Kids to the Butterfly House
There’s something charming about this rustic butterfly sanctuary. Run by local resident Leonardo, it’s definitely off the tourist trail and a great place to teach kids about the butterfly life cycle and the importance of conserving the eight butterfly species found in Machu Picchu.
How to get there: A 25-minute walk from Aguas Calientes along the same road as the buses. The sanctuary is on the right before the bridge.
🌿 3. Visit the Mandor Gardens and Waterfall
A gentle 40-minute walk from Aguas Calientes leads to this peaceful oasis. Wander through the rainforest, enjoy a picnic, or take a refreshing dip in the waterfall.
How to get there: Follow the train tracks out of Aguas Calientes. Mandor is clearly marked along the route. Bring a hat, water, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
💧 4. Soak in the Cocalmayo Hot Springs
Skip the crowded baths in Aguas Calientes and take a day trip to the nearby town of Santa Teresa for a soak in crystal-clear thermal pools. Each pool has a different temperature, perfect for relaxing sore muscles after hiking. The location is stunning, right next to the roaring Vilcanota River.
Open 24 hours: Go at night for stargazing or in the morning for tranquility.
How to get there: Take the PeruRail train from Aguas Calientes to Hidroeléctrica (~€28), then a shared taxi to the hot springs.
🌸 5. Visit the Orchid Garden
Rainy season in Machu Picchu (November to March) is the perfect time for orchid spotting. Machu Picchu is famous for its orchids, with over 400 species blooming in the area. The best place to see them is the slightly rustic orchid garden run by the Mendoza Mora family.
