admin July 3, 2024

The Yanahuara Viewpoint is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city of Arequipa, and is part of the city tours in Arequipa . Offering an unparalleled view of the city, this viewpoint allows you to contemplate the three iconic snow-capped mountains that embrace the region: the imposing Chachani, the majestic Pichu Picchu and the emblematic Misti, eternal symbols of Arequipa.

History and Origin of the Yanahuara Viewpoint

Built in the 19th century as part of a beautification process for the area, the Yanahuara Viewpoint stands in front of a picturesque park and next to the historic colonial Church of San Juan Bautista. Its narrow streets, with an Andalusian architectural style, add a magical touch to the surroundings. The viewpoint, built with ashlar extracted from the slopes of the aforementioned volcanoes, has inscriptions on its façade that include thoughts of prominent Arequipeño figures. Near the viewpoint, you can find craft stalls and various tourist services that complement the experience.

Meaning and Evolution of the Name

The viewpoint has been known by different names over time. Initially called Chimba, which in Quechua means “the other side of the river”, it included the towns and villages from Cayma to Tiabaya. Later, it was designated as San Juan Bautista de Chimba, in honor of the saint who became its patron. Finally, it adopted the name Yanahuara, which means “black shorts”, in reference to the Yanahuara Indian village, the most representative of the time. It is worth mentioning that the most important building work of the colonial era was located here, where fabrics and textile products were made.

Location and Altitude of the Yanahuara Viewpoint

Located approximately 2 kilometers from the historic center of Arequipa , the Mirador de Yanahuara is located at an altitude of more than 2,300 meters above sea level.

Features and Attractions

The Mirador de Yanahuara is made up of a series of arches built with sillar, a volcanic stone characteristic of the region. On its façade, there are engraved reflections of prominent Arequipeño figures. From this privileged point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city that takes your breath away. While in Arequipa, you can also take the Colca Canyon Tour 1 day
