Peru 2-Week Itinerary 2026 — The Complete Southern Circuit (13 Days)
If you have 13 days in Peru, this itinerary takes you through the country’s most spectacular destinations without wasted travel time: Lima, the Ballestas Islands, the Huacachina oasis, the enigmatic Nazca Lines, the white city of Arequipa, the Colca Canyon with its condors, Lake Titicaca and the floating Uros Islands, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Humantay Lake, and the Rainbow Mountain.
This is the circuit that covers the most ground in the shortest time — ideal for first-time visitors to Peru who want to experience the country’s most iconic destinations in a single trip.
Circuit summary: 13 days · Lima → Southern Coast → Arequipa → Colca → Puno → Cusco · Covers Lima, Paracas, Huacachina, Nazca, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain
Day 1 — Lima: Arrival & City Tour
Arrival at Jorge Chávez International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in Miraflores. Lima surprises most travelers who underestimate it — the historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cliffs of Miraflores overlook the Pacific, and the city is consistently ranked among the world’s top gastronomic destinations.
Afternoon Lima City Tour: Plaza Mayor, Cathedral, Government Palace, San Francisco Convent (with its famous catacombs), and the Miraflores clifftop viewpoints over the Pacific.
Accommodation: Lima (Miraflores recommended)
Day 2 — Ballestas Islands & Huacachina
Early departure south along the coast. First stop: Paracas, for the Ballestas Islands boat tour — Peru’s answer to the Galápagos. A 2-hour ride past massive colonies of sea lions, Humboldt penguins, pelicans, and seabirds, plus a close pass of the enormous Candelabra geoglyph carved into the cliffs.
Afternoon transfer to Huacachina — South America’s only natural oasis. A lagoon ringed by palms, surrounded by sand dunes up to 100 meters high. The highlight: a sunset dune buggy ride with sandboarding — one of the trip’s most adrenaline-fueled moments.

Accommodation: Huacachina or Ica
Day 3 — Nazca Lines Overflight
One of the most mysterious experiences in the world: a Nazca Lines overflight in a small plane above the desert. Drawn over 2,000 years ago, the geoglyphs — the Condor, the Monkey, the Spider, the Hummingbird, the Astronaut and dozens more — are invisible from the ground but reveal extraordinary scale and precision from the air. Nobody has a definitive explanation for how or why they were made.
The flight lasts 30–40 minutes from Nazca Airport. Afternoon transfer toward Arequipa.
Accommodation: Arequipa
Day 4 — Arequipa City Tour & Santa Catalina Monastery
Arequipa, the “White City”, gets its name from its colonial buildings carved from sillar — a white volcanic stone quarried from the Misti volcano dominating the skyline. At 7,661 ft (2,335m), it’s also the ideal stop to begin acclimatizing to altitude before the Colca Canyon and Cusco.
The Arequipa City Tour covers the Plaza de Armas, the Basilica Cathedral, and the day’s centerpiece — the Santa Catalina Monastery: a city within a city, with its own streets, plazas, and convents painted in indigo blue and colonial red, where nuns lived in total seclusion for centuries. One of the most striking colonial complexes in South America.
Accommodation: Arequipa (2nd night — acclimatization)
Day 5 — Toward the Colca Canyon & Vicuña Reserve
Early departure from Arequipa toward the Colca Canyon. The 3-hour journey is part of the experience itself: the road climbs to the Volcanes Viewpoint (Patapampa) at 16,109 ft (4,910m) — the highest point of the circuit, where you can see the Mismi, Ampato, and Sabancaya volcanoes simultaneously. Altitude is felt strongly here — coca tea is offered and mandatory.
En route, a stop at the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, where vicuñas, alpacas, and vizcachas graze freely on the Andean puna. Arrival in Chivay for lunch. Afternoon visit to the Yanque Thermal Baths — natural hot spring pools at 86–100°F (30–38°C) on the banks of the Colca River.
Accommodation: Chivay
Day 6 — Colca Canyon & Condor Sighting
The circuit’s most anticipated wildlife moment: the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint at dawn. A very early start — before 7:00 AM — to arrive as thermal air currents form and the condors launch from the canyon walls. With a wingspan of up to 10.5 feet (3.2m), the Andean condor is the world’s largest flying bird — and in the Colca it soars just meters from the viewpoints.
The rest of the day explores canyon viewpoints, ancient pre-Inca agricultural terraces, and small valley villages before beginning the drive toward Puno.
Transfer: Chivay → Puno (~5–6 hours) · Accommodation: Puno
Day 7 — Lake Titicaca: Uros Islands & Taquile
Lake Titicaca at 12,507 ft (3,812m) is the world’s highest navigable lake — and its islands are a unique cultural experience. The full day on the lake covers two essential stops:
Uros Islands: over 60 artificial islands built entirely from totora reeds — a floating world inhabited by the Uros people for centuries, with homes, boats, and even cooking fires all made from the same plant.
Taquile Island: 2.5–3 hours by boat from Puno. Taquile’s textile art was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Lunch with panoramic lake views before returning to Puno.

Day 8 — To Cusco via the Baroque Route
The Puno to Cusco tourist bus is not just a transfer — it’s a journey through the Andean altiplano with guided stops at exceptional sites:
- ⛪ Andahuaylillas — the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas,” with colonial frescoes covering every inch of its interior
- 🏛️ Raqchi — the Inca temple of Wiracocha, one of the largest buildings the Inca Empire ever constructed
- ⛰️ La Raya — at 14,222 ft (4,335m), the highest point of the route and the continental divide between the Amazon and Titicaca basins
- 🏛️ Pukara — pre-Inca archaeological site with a small but fascinating museum
Arrival in Cusco in the afternoon.
Accommodation: Cusco (1st night — acclimatization)
Day 9 — Sacred Valley of the Incas
The Sacred Valley was the agricultural heartland and cultural center of the Inca Empire. The full-day tour covers:
- 🏛️ Písac — hilltop Inca ruins + artisan market in the village plaza
- 🍽️ Buffet lunch at a valley restaurant with panoramic views
- 🧂 Maras Salt Mines — 3,000 cascading salt ponds in use since before the Inca Empire
- ⭕ Moray — the mysterious concentric terraced circles that served as an Inca agricultural laboratory
- 🏯 Ollantaytambo — the only Inca town continuously inhabited to this day, with its imposing fortress
Accommodation: Cusco
Day 10 — Machu Picchu
The trip’s centerpiece. 4:00 AM departure from Cusco, transfer to Ollantaytambo train station, then a panoramic train ride through the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes. Bus up to the citadel entrance.
With a certified bilingual guide, you’ll explore the urban, agricultural, and religious sectors: the Guardian’s House with its classic panoramic view, the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Quarters, the terraces, and the Main Plaza. Free time to explore independently or — if pre-booked — to climb Machu Picchu Mountain (2.5 hours additional, separate ticket).
Return by train, transfer back to Cusco.

Day 11 — Humantay Lake
One of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Cusco region — and still relatively uncrowded compared to Machu Picchu. Humantay Lake at 13,779 ft (4,200m) is a turquoise glacial lake fed by meltwater from the Humantay snowcap. The uphill hike takes about 1.5–2 hours from the Soraypampa starting point — demanding but accessible for most travelers.
The view from the lakeside viewpoint — turquoise water, glacier above, mountain silence — is one of the circuit’s most powerful photographic moments.
Accommodation: Cusco
Day 12 — Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)
The circuit’s finale: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) at 17,060 ft (5,200m) — the striped peak with its bands of red, pink, yellow, green, and white produced by the oxidation of different minerals. The uphill hike from Cusipata takes about 1.5–2 hours with significant elevation gain — by this point in the trip, after 4 days in Cusco and the Humantay hike, you’ll be well acclimatized.
If you prefer a quieter option, Palccoyo Mountain offers the same mineral colors at a lower altitude (16,076 ft / 4,900m) with far fewer visitors and a gentler ascent.

Accommodation: Cusco (last night)
Day 13 — Free Morning & Airport Transfer
Free morning for last-minute shopping, a walk through Cusco’s historic center, or a visit to the San Pedro Market. Afternoon or evening transfer to Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport (CUZ) for your return or connecting flight.
💡 Tip: if your international flight departs from Lima, schedule the Cusco–Lima domestic flight for the afternoon of Day 13. International departures from Lima typically leave in the evening, which pairs well with a 4–6 PM domestic flight from Cusco.

Practical Tips for This Circuit
- 🏔️ Acclimatization: the circuit ascends altitude gradually (Lima 0m → Arequipa 7,661ft → Puno 12,507ft → Cusco 11,152ft → Humantay 13,779ft → Vinicunca 17,060ft) — this order is key to avoiding altitude sickness. Never do it in reverse.
- 🎫 Permits: if you want to replace Day 10 (Machu Picchu 1-day) with the 4-day Classic Inca Trail, reorganize Days 9–12 well in advance — permits sell out months ahead. See the permits guide →
- ☀️ Best season: May–October (dry season). Day 2 (Huacachina) works year-round. Day 3 (Nazca) depends on wind conditions — overflights can be cancelled in strong winds.
- 💰 Estimated budget: this complete circuit with all tours, 3-star hotels, and transfers runs approximately $1,800–$2,800 USD per person depending on the category of services selected.
